The beginnings: discoverers, adventurers — and businessmen
In 1962, Hamburg-based Uwe Schröder and Hans-Heinrich Pünjer founded HENKE & CO, a textile trading company. What started with terry towels soon extended to menswear pieces - until the first corduroy pants were marketed under the name of “Tom“. An idea was born.
Uwe Schröder’s spirit of discovery already showed at this early stage: in 1967, he boarded a 35-hour-flight to Hongkong, seeking an independent production site. Back then, adventures like this were not at all common in the fashion industry. He forged his own path and ended up founding his first factory in Vietnam… which ended up destroyed only two years later, during the Vietnam War.
The birth of the brand: We dress people!
But instead of giving up, Uwe had higher ambitions — he added “Tailor“ to the already established “Tom“ and created today’s brand. From day one, he employed with the now familiar logo.
The first Tom Tailor shirts already made a statement for freedom and adventure. They were released in 1972, accompanied by the claim WE DRESS PEOPLE.
